PLANTS AND CONCRETE FACES / プラントとコンクリートの外観

Even in the middle of Tokyo, plenty of residents hanker after a direct connection to the ground, a desire rooted in the primacy that nature holds in Japan. There is a national penchant for things that grow. In Tokyo, the open gates reveals lovely gardens and those with less or no land do have the potted plants and parks that function as everyone’s backyard.

In Japan a single blossom is often deemed more precious than an entire flower bed. But the appreciation of nature is not limited to the individual homeowner. It is manifest at the urban scale as well. Even in this city of concrete, greenery and trees are surprisingly plentiful and usually well tended.
